With the FIRST AmeriCopers VISTA program, you have a chance to live and serve in the Rio Grande Valley. With a one year commitment, you will receive a modest living allowance, access to a health benefit plan and childcare assistance if eligible. After completing a one year term, VISTA members can choose to receive an end of service education award of $5,920.00 for education expenses or an end of service cash stipend award of $1,800.00.

Interventions must occur early in a child’s school career in order to effectively cultivate interest and ability in STEM related disciplines. Research has demonstrated that participation in FIRST programs leads to increased interest in STEM, knowledge about STEM concepts, and result in more students expressing a desire to attend college and have a STEM career.

FIRST VISTA Members will support this goal by working in low-income/underserved communities to:

  • Recruit youth to participate in FIRST programs
  • Recruit Mentors/Coaches and Volunteers to support FIRST teams and events
  • Support and sustain FIRST teams – securing cash/in-kind donations, assessing and meeting needs of Mentor/Coaches, etc.

Provide capacity-building support to other organizations that serve FIRST teams/programs in low-income/underserved communities
