McAllen, Texas — The McAllen ELKS Lodge, FIRST RGV and the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association (STJDA) got together and offered a special, week long summer camp for children in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) with Type I and Type II diabetes.

This special camp required the assistance of a registered nurse and other staff members that were specifically trained to monitor glucose levels.

Participants were all smiles when volunteers unboxed the FIRST Lego League (FLL) robots and got quickly to work reviewing the materials that came along with the kit.

We are proud to continue to give residents an opportunity to explore FIRST robotics and we will continue to do our part to bridge the gap between special needs and this amazing program, said Milly Hernandez, FIRST – RGV chief operations officer.

Plans are already underway to get a similar camp scheduled for the summer of 2018. Thanks to all of the student organizations from the University of Texas – RGV that helped out.
